Mikhailovsky Ballet at the London Coliseum - 29.07.2008

Debra Craine - TIMESONLINE
Denis Matvienko and Anastasya Matvienko (the husband-and-wife stars of the company) brought plenty of beautiful dancing to their leading roles, if not quite the soulful dramatic exposition one hoped for. His Count Albrecht was sensitive but not wholly honourable, which is right (his betrayal is what sends Giselle to her death), and his dancing in Act II brought forth an immaculate display of refined and robust classical technique. Anastasya Matvienko's Giselle was delivered with a lustrous sheen, impressive technical control and a creditable transformation from innocent peasant girl to tragic wraith.

Gavin Roebuck - The Stage

In the title role, Anastasia Matvyenko, previously little known in Britain, reveals herself on the Coliseum stage as a world-class ballerina of the first rank. With an earthy and charming approach to the role of the simple peasant girl contrasting with her ethereal and delicate interpretation in Act II, she is an accomplished artist as well as having a beautifully refined balletic technique.

Showing his versatility as a performer, Denis Matvyenko portrayed Albrecht with a more subtle emphasis than his heroic interpretation of Spartacus earlier in the week and partnered his wife in Act II with an exquisite and emotionally moving elegance.

David Dougill - From The Sunday Times
Denis Matvienko's Spartacus, Marat Shemiunov's Crassus and Denis Morozov's Crixus rival each other in thrilling bravura; Anastasia Matvienko is a glamorous Sabina, Irina Perren a soulful Valeria.
